Innovation, Adaption and Collaboration: How the Pacific has led the world with new approaches to ensure sustainable fisheries, and create a safe, just, and secure ocean

Host: Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency and OceanMind
Location: Side Event Room 4 - Btaches 63

It is estimated that ocean fisheries contribute over US$1 billion to Pacific economies annually. Protecting the incomes, jobs and livelihoods of Pacific people is crucial. Hear about the cutting-edge work being done by the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, in collaboration with partners, to protect this vast ocean area from IUU fishing through its integrated Monitoring, Control and Surveillance framework. The event will showcase the regional collaboration and the application of high-tech solutions to ensure sustainable fisheries and create a safe, just and secure ocean. The event will also include a Palau case study from OceanMind, the Palau Division of Maritime Law Enforcement and the Bureau of Public Safety detailing the results of their project using remote sensing tools for maritime domain awareness and for creating intelligence lead enforcement efforts. The case study will include discussions on how these management techniques might also be applied to other small island nations.
