The Role of Transparency in Addressing IUU Fishing and Human Rights Abuses

Host: Bloomberg Philanthropies and Oceana
Location: Side Event Room 4 - Btaches 63

Join Oceana, Global Fishing Watch, and Bloomberg Philanthropies for a special discussion about the ongoing impacts of IUU fishing and human rights abuses at sea, and how governments, civil society, and communities can leverage open data and technology to address these problems. This event will bring together governments and NGOs to discuss the intersection of IUU fishing, national security, human rights, communities, and technological innovations. It will expose the human impacts of IUU fishing, help us better understand the importance of national security risks, and share stories from around the world – including the Philippines and Panama – about efforts to combat IUU fishing. Greater transparency is needed to improve fisheries management in order to secure a healthy, thriving, and vibrant ocean. Transparency and technology allow States to leverage limited assets and share the burden of enforcement, offering a cost-effective and efficient means of governing our vast ocean.
